About Multispecific Antibodies

What Are Multispecific Antibodies?

Multispecific antibodies are engineered antibodies designed to engage more than one biological target simultaneously. In preclinical research, they are used to evaluate interaction biology within a single experimental system, enabling direct investigation of how multiple pathways, cell types, or molecular signals influence one another.

Bispecific antibodies are the most established multispecific format and are the primary focus of the examples discussed here. By engaging two targets at once, bispecific antibodies allow researchers to study biological relationships that are difficult to resolve using sequential or parallel single-target approaches.

Why Multispecific Antibodies Matter

Sequence-defined antibodies support consistent performance across experiments and time.

Single-target antibodies are designed to interrogate one pathway or mechanism at a time. While effective for isolating individual effects, this approach can obscure how pathways cooperate, compete, or interfere with one another within intact biological systems.

Multispecific antibodies address this limitation by enabling concurrent engagement of multiple targets in the same model. This supports clearer mechanistic insight by allowing interaction effects to be observed directly rather than inferred across separate experiments.

Understanding Interaction Biology in a Single Experimental System

Bispecific antibodies support direct observation of interaction effects within a single model.

Single Target Antibodies

Single-target antibodies engage one biological pathway at a time. Interaction effects are typically inferred by comparing results across separate experiments.

Designing Experiments Around Interaction Biology

Multispecific antibodies support hypothesis testing within a single experimental system.

Multispecific antibodies are used to design experiments that examine how two biological targets influence one another within a single experimental system. By enabling concurrent target engagement, researchers can evaluate whether coordinated signaling alters outcomes, determine when interaction effects are context dependent, and interpret complex biological responses with fewer assumptions than sequential or comparative approaches.

Where Multispecific Antibodies Add Value in Preclinical Research

Multispecific antibodies are used in preclinical research to study how multiple biological targets interact within a single experimental system. By enabling simultaneous target engagement, they support direct observation of interaction-driven effects and clearer interpretation of complex biological outcomes without relying on comparisons across separate experiments.

Bispecific Antibodies from Bio X Cell

Defined Dual-Target Bispecific Formats

Bio X Cell bispecific antibodies are engineered to engage two defined targets simultaneously using established recombinant architectures, supporting consistent interrogation of interaction biology.

Format Diversity for Research Applications

Bispecific antibodies are available in multiple established architectures, including knob-into-hole, head-to-tail, and BiTE-style formats, supporting flexibility across experimental designs.

In Vivo–Ready Formulation Options

Bispecific antibodies are provided in carrier-free formulations appropriate for in vivo and advanced in vitro organoid/organ-on-chip studies, without preservatives or stabilizing proteins that may interfere with biological interpretation

Fc Modulation Options

Select bispecific antibodies are available with defined Fc modifications to support studies where Fc-mediated effector activity is not desired, enabling clearer interpretation of target-driven effects.

Controlled Endotoxin Levels

Bispecific antibodies are produced with controlled endotoxin levels and lot-specific QC testing. Products are typically ≤1 EU/mg, with lower levels available upon request.

Pathogen Screening

Bispecific antibody lots are screened for murine pathogens, with results provided in product-specific datasheets to support animal facility requirements.
